I did not try filming anything with it, but the mechanisms all seem to be working normally. It also contains half of an original film cartridge dated 41. The cover of the film cartridge is missing but the important bit that would hold the reels is still there. This is exactly the sort of little film camera you would expect soldiers to take to the front with them.
