For future builds I'd like to try a Phenix Mirage Rod blank and there is a AT Matrix 5' 1pc blank that might have some promise

If the water is deeper or the conditions are rougher, a soft plastic, metal or diving lure is generally the best option

Many anglers prefer a reel seat that allows them to feel the blank with their finger when holding the rod and reel (a cutout on the bottom of the reel seat exposes the rods blank)
